Firstly, ensure your friend has completed the first 3 missions in story mode, then try joining by creating a character (assuming they don’t have one/second slot). Secondly, create a new xbox account, sign in with the account that has live, switch back to new account, then launch GTA. If these don’t work, try launching other multiplayer games
